Weighing the Decision to Go Solar

Is now the right time to invest in solar power for home owners?  Just take a look at (fossil fuel) electrical prices in Arizona in the last few years.  The trend is clear.  Year after year, electrical prices are creeping upwards, and this is a pattern that is unlikely to stop. After all, the amount of oil and coal in this world is dropping by the day.  The prices will only keep going up in the years ahead, barring a miraculous discovery of new sources. Most forms of alternative power, such as wind turbines, are still out of the reach of residential … Read more

Back To School – Solar Power 101

So how does solar power work, anyway? We’ve been chasing solar power as a practical energy source for a very long time. In fact, the first working solar cell was invented in 1839!  About fifty years later, the first working  solar panel was created, however it could only capture about 1% of the solar energy. That’s been the primary stumbling block in solar power: energy efficiency.  A solar panel has to be able to capture enough energy from the sun to justify its existence.  It wasn’t for another fifty years, in 1946, that the first practical design for a useful solar cell … Read more

What Is Photovoltaic Energy?

When you’re researching solar power for your home, you’ll come across the term solar PV or photovoltaic. So what does that mean? The photovoltaic effect is the process that creates voltage or electric current by exposure to light. Photo means light, and voltaic means volts or electricity. A solar panel is made up of photovoltaic cells made out of a silicon semi-conductor. When these special silicon cells are exposed to light, they generate electricity. The solar panel system then converts that electricity into current that can be used by your house. Saying solar PV is one way to differentiate from … Read more

How is Solar Power Delivered?

Solar power uses the free energy from the sun to generate electricity. Of course there’s more science behind it but it’s all transparent to you. Solar panels are made of silicon chips that convert light energy into electrical energy. The solar chips are part of a module made of steel and glass. That module is mounted on the roof of your home. A licensed electrician wires the solar panels into your home’s electric panel. The solar panels generate direct current, or DC, electricity like a battery or a car. An inverter converts the DC into alternating current, or AC, that’s … Read more

Code Changes in Surprise! What that Means for Solar Customers

Act now to avoid code restrictions! The City of Surprise is adopting the 2012 IFC (International Fire Code) starting September 1st 2014. A reduced system size means less solar electricity can be generated. Some Surprise residents want to get their solar system permits before these code changes take effect, thus maximizing the solar potential of their home. To make sure we meet the deadline and have time for permits and design, Harmon Solar is recommending Surprise residents … Read more

Like many Valley transplants, the extremely hot summer months take some getting used to. While most newcomers eventually adjust to their new climate, the one thing that never seems tolerable is the high utility bills that are inevitable for five months out of the year. T.J. and Roni Todd are no exception to this scenario, but rather than accepting this was just part of living in the Valley of the Sun, they decided to take matters into their own hands. At the suggestion of APS, the Todd’s tried a time-of-use energy plan, a home energy audit and duct repairs, but … Read more

How Solar Power Saves Money for Lake Havasu City, Arizona Residential Home

How do solar panels make energy? It’s a simple and neat trick. When two opposite and very light-reactive materials are layered to catch light, they produce positive and negative charges that can be used like the charge from a battery. This even works on cloudy days. The power can be transformed into the same alternating current that the power company supplies. Because extra supply and demand can be exchanged with the power company through the lines, the bill is only for the difference, so nothing is wasted. This makes installing solar panels an investment worth their cost. The energy savings continue … Read more

It then converts those rays into direct current (DC) electricity. The DC needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) because that is what is used in a home. This method creates energy savings for residential users because the photovoltaic solar system will collect any surplus energy collected by the solar panel during the day and will then draw from this bank of energy at night when the sun isn’t out. Solar panels can be installed … Read more

Price vs Piece of Mind

In today’s competitive environment, it is too easy to get lured into a buying decision with an offer of lowest price. This often results in a “buyer beware situation” where you ask yourself; am I really going to get what they are selling me for that low price? More often than not when something sounds too good to be true, that is usually the case. There is a reason that sound advice is to complete your diligence on the company, check references and find out if the vendor truly delivers on what they promise. The Solar Debate: Buy or Lease?

This last year has seen a tremendous amount of change in the offers available from Arizona Solar Companies.  When utility incentives were at $3.00/Watt, customers were literally flocking to purchase their solar systems.  By doing so, consumers were able to take advantage of the utility incentives as well as the 30% Federal Tax credit and the $1,000.00 Arizona state tax credit.  Buying your solar system just plain made great economic sense.  In 2010, utility incentives started to decline and continue to do so as of this writing.  The interesting part of the solar financial formula, is that even with today’s … Read more
